New York (People's Daily) - China is an important pillar of the multilateral system and has made significant contributions to multilateralism, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres said Thursday, adding China's "Belt and Road Initiative" is a perfect testimony to its commitment to globalization, free trade and international cooperation.
He made the reamarks while accepting a joint interview with the People's Daily and other Chinese media at the UN headquarters in New York.
Guterres will be invited to visit China from April 6 to 11 to participate in the 2018 annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia and will visit the China Peacekeeping Police Training Center.
In an interview, UN Secretary-General Guterres said that he is very pleased to accept the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit China and attend the 2018 Boao Forum for Asia annual conference. He said that for China, this is a very important moment in history. In the 40 years of economic reform and opening up, China has achieved unprecedented economic growth, and poverty has substantially decreased, making a very important contribution to the improvement of the global economy.
"The solution to the global problem cannot be found on the basis of country-to-country. Global issues need to be answered on a global scale, and global answers can only be realized under a multilateral framework," Guterres said in answer to his views on the current multilateral free trade order.
Guterres said that while globalization brings benefits such as economic growth, increased trade volume, reduced poverty, longer life expectancy, and an increase in the middle class, it also increases the number of victims of globalization and increases inequality. Many people are left behind.
He pointed out that the answer to these questions is not protectionism or isolationism, but international cooperation, and the 2030 sustainable development agenda can be an important tool for achieving this goal. "Do not deny globalization but make globalization better. This is not only the goal of the United Nations 2030 sustainable development agenda, but also the goal of all governments."
Guterres also stated that China is an important pillar of the multilateral system. Due to the great success in economic development, China will eventually participate in the global governance system associated with the global economy and global development. The United Nations welcomes China's active participation in global governance and believes that this is a positive contribution to the world.
