China will achieve high-quality development and bring huge opportunities to Europe and the world in a new era, said the Chinese Ambassador to the European Union (EU) Zhang Ming on Friday.
Delivering a speech to the faculty members and students of the College of Europe in Brugge, Belgium, Zhang explicitly explained what China will do and how to the advance China-EU relationship.
China will contribute more to innovation and green development, said the ambassador. Moreover, China will continue to open up its market to the world.
To enhance China-EU relations in the new era, Zhang said that it is important to think strategically, to think big and to think positively.
China and the EU, which take up 10 percent of land area, 25 percent of population and one third of GDP of the world, need to join forces to promote open economies and to ensure that multilateralism is widely respected and functions well, and make global governance more equitable, Zhang said.
Besides, China and the EU must look beyond differences on specific issues and focus on the big picture, which includes linking the Belt and Road initiative with Europe's development strategies, advancing the Bilateral Investment Treaty talks and initiating joint feasibility studies on a China-EU free trade agreement , and exploring new areas of cooperation, said Zhang.
"It is important for the two sides to work together to bring China-EU relations to a higher level and deliver benefits to their people," he added. "China hopes to see a strong euro and a united, stable, prosperous and strong EU that plays a bigger part in global affairs."
Even when China and the EU had hard times, China still hoped that the EU could respect China's development path, core interests and major concerns, and see China's development in an objective and rational fashion, Zhang said.
China has maintained a stable development rate for decades since its reform and opening up policy took effect, but the "China threat theory" made up by conspirators has diluted China's achievements in modernization, poverty alleviation, anti-corruption and many other areas.
"China needs a peaceful and stable world to work with others with an open mind," Zhang said. "I can assure you that China's development is good news to Europe and the whole world."
