Xi outlines blueprint to develop China’s strength in cyberspace

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "keenly" grasping the historic opportunity for informatization development in a bid to build the country's strength in cyberspace.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, chairman of the Central Military Commission, and head of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, made the remarks at a national conference on the work of cyber security and informatization held from Friday to Saturday. China publishes master plan for Xiongan New Area

China on Saturday published the master plan document for Xiongan New Area, the creation of which is "a strategic decision with profound historic significance made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core."

The plan is the fundamental guideline on the planning and development of Xiongan New Area, mapping out the area's future by 2035 and looking ahead into the mid-21st century.

The document says the new area will aim at the forefront of cutting-edge technology, map out tech industries at a high starting point, and push for coordinated development of the real economy, technological innovation, finance and human resources.

Xiongan also aims to attract international organizations related to the Belt and Road Initiative to participate in its development and host international and domestic high-end forums. (Xinhua)

North Korea to suspend missile testing

North Korean state media said it will halt its tests of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The decision was made at the plenary meeting of the central committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news.

The meeting also called for concentrating national efforts to achieve a strong socialist economy and groundbreaking improvements in people's lives. (People’s Daily app)

China’s Foreign Ministry welcomes North Korea’s suspension of nuclear and missile tests

China welcomes North Korea’s suspension of its nuclear and missile tests, said Lu Kang, spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry on Saturday.

The move will further ease tensions on the Peninsula and push for North Korea’s denuclearization, said Lu.

China supports North Korea in dealing with the concerns of relevant parties through dialogues and hopes the latter can gain economic success, he added. (People’s Daily app)

UN celebrates annual Chinese Language Day

The UN celebrated its ninth Chinese Language Day at its headquarters in New York on Friday, by hosting a series of lectures on Chinese film, art and education.

UN’s Chinese Language Day celebrates the language’s contribution to the world while encouraging others to learn it.

One Chinese UN official who attended the event said Chinese is one of the oldest languages and is also becoming increasingly relevant in today’s international environment. (People’s Daily app)

Chinese-built energy plant is biggest in Colombia

Construction has been completed on Colombia’s largest coal-powered power plant. Columbia, which is rich in coal reserves, is determined to build power plants as a supplement to mitigate electricity shortages during its dry season.

The plant was built by the China United Engineering Corporation and will employ many locals.

Employees of the plant will also receive professional training from the Chinese company to keep up to date on their job responsibilities. (People’s Daily app)

US orders emergency airplane engine checks

Following a deadly Southwest Airlines accident earlier this week, US and European airline regulators ordered the inspection of nearly 700 aircraft engines on Friday.

On Tuesday, one passenger on the Southwest flight was killed after a fan blade broke off and caused the airplane engine to explode in mid-air.

US and European officials said the widely-used engine design could cause similar accidents if left unchecked and inspections will begin within next month. (People’s Daily app)

UN warns against wide use of new vaccine

The World Health Organization said the new vaccine for dengue should only be given to previous victims of the virus to limit the development of fatal symptoms.

The organization said doctors should consider their patient’s medical history before giving the vaccine.

Dengue is a mosquito-spread illness that occurs in tropical and sub-tropical areas. It has symptoms like the flu and infects nearly 100 million people each year. (People’s Daily app)
