Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Training Institute launched in Beijing

In a major push to accelerate the region's energy transition, state-owned giant China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy) announced Wednesday the launch of the Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Training Academy, pledging to train 1,000 clean energy professionals over the next decade.

Unveiled at the APEC Clean Energy Innovation Practice Seminar in Beijing, the academy marks a key host contribution by China leading up to APEC 2026.

The institution is designed to serve as a permanent platform for technical exchange, policy alignment, and workforce development across member economies.

The initiative arrives as Asia-Pacific nations face shared challenges, including grid modernization, the rapid integration of renewables, and phase-outs of legacy power systems. Addressing these pressures, China has framed its 2026 APEC energy strategy around the theme "Jointly Building an Inclusive, Innovative, and Collaborative Asia-Pacific Energy Community."

During the seminar, Wang Jianbo, deputy director-general of China's National Energy Administration, outlined three strategic priorities for a new energy platform. The first is multilateral infrastructure, establishing open, joint-capacity platforms for cross-border cooperation. The second is broad-based participation, expanding technical education and talent coverage across all APEC economies. The third is tangible industrial progress, converting high-level policy consensus into concrete, real-world energy projects.

The academy's establishment follows last month's APEC Advanced Training Program for Leading Professionals in the Clean Energy Sector in Fuzhou, which brought together more than 30 energy leaders from 12 APEC economies. The new academy will act as an operational base to support the upcoming 16th APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting and reinforce regional cooperation frameworks.
