China and Spain agreed on Wednesday to build on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties to jointly promote the development of the relationship and deliver more benefit to the two peoples.

The consensus was reached at a meeting between visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Praising Sanchez's endeavor to develop bilateral relations and his support for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Xi said China always cherishes the traditional friendship with Spain and highly values Spain's important role in international affairs.

For his part, Sanchez said that Xi's visit is of great historic significance and will open a new era for Spain-China relations, as it is the first visit by a Chinese head of state to Spain in 13 years and coincides with the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Spanish King Felipe VI to cement friendship and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

This state visit is the first of its kind to Europe since his re-election as Chinese president in March and also the first leg of his Europe and Latin America trip, Xi said, expressing hope that the visit will consolidate friendship, uplift cooperation and ensure long-term stability of bilateral ties.

For his part, King Felipe VI said Spain is willing to maintain close contacts with China, enhance pragmatic cooperation, strengthen communication and coordination in multilateral affairs, and actively push for deeper EU-China relations. (Xinhua)

Report faults Indonesian airline's safety measures in crash

Faulty equipment and Indonesian carrier Lion Air's own safety failures had pilots fighting for control of their Boeing 737 MAX 8 as it plunged into the Java Sea on Oct. 28, killing all 189 people aboard, investigators said Wednesday.

Briefing reporters on the aircraft's black box data, the investigators said they were still struggling to understand why the plane crashed but they cited multiple factors centered on faulty angle-of-attack vane, or AOA, and an automatic safety system that repeatedly forced the plane's nose down despite the pilots' efforts to correct the problem.

The pilots simply may have been overwhelmed, said one of the crash investigators. (AP)

US intelligence chief to brief NATO on US withdrawal from INF treaty

US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Tuesday that he is heading to Europe to explain to allies Washington's decision to pull out of a major nuclear weapons treaty because of Russian violations.

Coats told reporters that he will meet NATO defense and intelligence officials in Brussels this week to discuss President Donald Trump's decision in October to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), a move that has fueled fears of a dangerous arms race.

"The intelligence community assesses Russia has flight-tested, produced, and deployed cruise missiles with a range capability that are prohibited by the treaty," Coats said. (AFP)

Powell: US economy healthy and rate hikes aren’t automatic

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell cast a bright picture of the US economy Wednesday and appeared to suggest that the Fed might consider a pause in its interest rate hikes next year to assess the impact of its credit tightening.

Powell’s comments ignited a rally on Wall Street, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging more than 200 points after his remarks were released.

The chairman also suggested that interest rates appear to be just below the level the Fed calls “neutral,” where they are thought to neither stimulate growth nor impede it. (AP)

NASA's InSight sends signals to Earth after landing on Mars, deploys solar arrays

NASA's InSight spacecraft sent signals to Earth after its successful landing on Mars, indicating its solar panels are open and collecting sunlight on the Martian surface.

In the coming days, the mission team will unstow InSight's robotic arm and use the attached camera to snap photos of the ground so engineers can decide where to place the spacecraft's scientific instruments.

It will take roughly three months before the instruments are fully deployed and can send back data. (Xinhua)
