There is every reason to be fully confident in the future of the Chinese economy, President Xi Jinping said Monday.

Xi made the remarks when delivering a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

At present, China's economy remains generally stable and is making good progress, Xi said, citing data including the GDP growth of 6.7 percent in the first three quarters of 2018.

"China's economy is truly performing well within the reasonable range, giving us a solid foundation for delivering the development goals for the whole year," Xi said.

With the Belt and Road Initiative being further implemented, two-way investment and trade between China and countries along the Belt and Road have continued to gather pace, Xi said.

"All in all, the favorable conditions are in place for the long-term, healthy and steady growth of the Chinese economy," Xi said. (Xinhua)

Heads of int'l organizations laud China's continuous commitment to opening up, offer anti-protectionism recipe

Heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) spoke highly of China's continuous commitment to reform and opening-up on Monday, during the inaugural Import Expo in Shanghai.

In her remarks, IMF chief Christine Lagarde hailed China's efforts in connecting with the world and making common prosperity possible.

By trade, hard work and learning from others, China has helped transform the global economy, said Lagarde.

For his part, WB President Jim Yong Kim said China has been persistent in opening up despite some domestic pains.

"So by ensuring that all layers of the society gained from the opening up, China ensured the continued support for the reform program. This is the lesson for everyone," said Kim.

WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo, during his opening address, said the CIIE sends out a clear message about China's growing role in global trade, and "reminds us of an essential truth, that trade is not a zero-sum game, where exports are good and imports are bad."  (Xinhua)

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that he will meet with a high-ranking official from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) at the end of this week.

The US top diplomat said the meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim in June set them on the path they're on today.

"We haven't had any missile tests. There have been no nuclear tests. We've had the returns of American remains. These are all good steps," Pompeo said.

Pompeo also confirmed the DPRK will not see any US economic sanctions lifted until it has demonstrated complete denuclearization. (Xinhua)

A majority of Germans want the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to hold the centrist course adopted under its departing leader Angela Merkel, a poll published on Monday by RTL and NTV broadcasters found.

Following a disappointing result for the CDU in regional elections in Hesse, Chancellor Merkel announced she would step down from her role as party leader in December, a position she has held for 18 years.

So far, Black Rock chairman Merz, acting health minister Spahn and CDU secretary general and close Merkel ally Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer have officially entered the race to become her successor. (Xinhua)

Lion Air jet had airspeed problems on last 4 flights

CRASH.jpg

The "black box" data recorder from a crashed Lion Air jet shows its airspeed indicator malfunctioned during its last four flights, investigators said Monday.

Erratic speed and altitude on the plane's previous flight, from Denpasar on Bali to Jakarta, were widely reported and "when we opened the black box, yes indeed the technical problem was the airspeed or the speed of the plane," National Transportation Safety Committee chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono told a news conference.

"Data from the black box showed that two flights before Denpasar-Jakarta also experienced the same problem," he said, and added, "In the black box there were four flights that experienced problems with the airspeed indicator." (AP)
