Chinese State Councilor, Iranian Foreign Minister hold talks

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met in Beijing.

Wang says the Iran nuclear deal was hard-earned and helped safeguard the international system of non-proliferation and maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.

He added that China regards Iran as an important partner in the Belt and Road Initiative and is willing to work with Iran to implement the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries to promote various cooperation. (People’s Daily app)

Hainan invites global talent

Hainan Province announced a plan on Sunday to attract top-tier foreign and domestic talent to help the island change into an international pilot free trade zone.

From now until 2025, Hainan will start a recruitment plan to invite a million talented individuals from home and abroad, Li Jun, deputy party secretary of Hainan said.

The plan will offer preferential policies, including loans and free housing, to support talented individuals coming to the tropical island province.

Master-level talent and outstanding professionals will be welcomed in fields such as space science and technology, deep-sea research, seed breeding and tropical agriculture. All recruits can choose to live anywhere in Hainan and will enjoy the same policy treatment as local residents when buying a house. (China Daily)

Protests held as US opens Jerusalem embassy

More than 100 people from various groups staged protests outside the new US embassy in Jerusalem on Monday under close police watch during the relocation ceremony.

Ivanka Trump helped declare the new embassy open and a plaque and seal were unveiled before the 800 guests at the ceremony.

Protesters included Palestinians who are against the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, and Israeli Jews who are in favor of a two-state solution. There were also Israeli and American supporters of US President Donald Trump and his decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. 

The same morning, violence erupted along the Gaza border leaving 43 Palestinians dead and hundreds more wounded by Israeli forces. (AFP – People’s Daily app)

Pompeo outlines US plans to help North Korea in exchange for denuclearization

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday outlined the United States' plans to help the development of North Korea if the country agrees to complete denuclearization.

Excluding the possibility of US economic aid to Pyongyang, the top diplomat said "American know-how, knowledge, entrepreneurs, and risk-takers" will work alongside the North Korean people "to create a robust economy for their people."

Pompeo said the US and North Korean teams would work together to "put our two leaders in a position where it's just possible we might pull off a historic undertaking."

On Saturday, North Korea announced it would hold a ceremony for the dismantling of its nuclear test site on May 23-25, taking a step forward towards the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. (Xinhua)

Chinese social media applauds pilot for safe landing

Airline Captain Liu Chuanjian is being hailed as an "epic hero" by Chinese social media users for safely landing a plane after one of its windshield panels blew out over Southwest China. 

Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8633 from Chongqing made an emergency landing at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at around 7:40 am on Tuesday.

The incident happened without any signs, and half of the co-pilot's body was outside the plane due to the sudden change in cabin pressure.

This is the first time such an incident has happened in China, Wang Ya'nan, deputy editor of Aerospace Knowledge magazine told the Global Times. He also said the captain had to land the plane while battling massive noise, equipment malfunctions, and cabin pressure changes.

Reports say that none of the plane’s 119 passengers were hurt in the incident, while the co-pilot and a flight attended were treated for minor injuries. (Global Times – People’s Daily app)

China’s driverless trains coming to Thailand

Puzhen Bombardier Transportation Systems, a Chinese railway rolling stock manufacturer, was recently approved to construct two monorail projects in Bangkok, Thailand.

This makes the company the first domestic firm to sell driverless monorail trains to a foreign country.

In March 2018, the company started trial operations for Shanghai’s first domestic Automated People Mover vehicle. (People’s Daily Online)

Chinese elderly double amputee scales Qomolangma

Xia Boyu, 70, on Monday scaled the world's highest peak Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, as the first double amputee climber from the Nepali side, government officials confirmed.

Before leaving for the expedition, the Chinese climber told media that it is his fifth attempt to scale the mountain.

He lost both his legs due to frostbite during his first attempt to reach the summit in 1975. (Xinhua – People’s Daily app)

World’s first Francois’ langur monkey twins welcomed in Guangzhou

Xiao Xiao, a female Francois' langur monkey, showed the public her new offspring at Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong province, on Sunday.

The new mother gave birth to the world’s first mixed-sex Francois' langur twins last month. The twins were born with bright orange fur, which will turn black like their mother’s within three months.

The Francois' langur monkey is one of China's most endangered wild animals and is noted as an endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list. (People’s Daily Online)
