SINGAPORE, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Nine outstanding new immigrants to Singapore were awarded Sunday night the 3rd Outstanding Contribution Awards for New Immigrants.
Among this year's awardees were Professor Shen Zexiang with the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the Nanyang Technological University, Wang Yuegu, a retired table tennis player and Yao Xiaoyun, an accomplished pianist and music educator.
Officiating at the awarding ceremony, Chee Hong Tat, Singapore's Senior Minister of State of the Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Education, encouraged the new immigrants to bring into full play their specialities to make greater contributions to Singapore.
To recognize the contributions of new immigrants, the Hua Yuan Association, a non-profit organization serving a new-generation of Chinese immigrants of different regions, set up the Outstanding Contribution Awards for New immigrants, said its President Wang Quancheng, adding that they hope to take this opportunity to push new immigrants to further contribute to Singapore.
Among the 1,000 participants to the ceremony were Zhang Xumin, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, and Tan Aik Hock, President of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Association.
