The latest version of the Data Center Infrastructure (DCI) standard Scorpio 3.0 was released at the 2018 Open Data Center Committee (ODCC) Summit, China’s leading datacenter event in Beijing on Tuesday.

A total of 22,000 all-in-one rack servers are expected to be deployed in 2018 and the industry value is going to reach $22 billion, up 41.5 percent compared to last year, said Zhang Binghua, deputy director of Baidu System Department.

Project Scorpio, under supervision of ODCC, is a full-fledged open DCI standard with significant visibility in the Chinese market. It seeks to create a modular and highly efficient rack-based DCI standard for easier design and delivery.

Huang Yejing, director of telecommunication development at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), vowed efforts on infrastructure construction, building talent pools and internationalization in the future to optimize the industry.

A standard for optical transmission technology was also issued during the conference, to catch up to the latest technology trends and China’s booming demand for data-center capacity.

Panels on finance and technology were announced to promote the healthy and rapid development of financial infrastructure and advance its innovative integration with other industries.

Technical panels from data centers, servers, networks and storage will guide projects with cutting-edge techniques.

Global players continue to engage with ODCC. Delegations from Intel, Samsung, Schneider, Seagate, Victor, 3M and Western Digital shared their achievements and experience in designing, building and operating data centers and discussed the development trends.

As an non-profit consortium formed by China’s leading technology providers Tencent, Baidu and Alibaba, and backed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, ODCC promotes open hyperscale data center specifications for building an ecosystem that shares proven best practices and designs, and leverages economy-of-scale efficiencies among China’s large players.
