Chinese car-hailing app Didi Chuxing acquires Brazil's 99 Taxis

Chinese car-hailing leader Didi Chuxing on Thursday announced that it is acquiring 99 Taxis, Brazil’s ride-hailing platform, as the Chinese business, boasting world’s largest of its kind, aims for a bigger global market.

Didi’s announcement has failed to provide details regarding the purchase, while media reports put the transaction price at around $600 million.

Didi first became an investor in 99 last January and the two platforms have reportedly conducted cooperation in technology and market development in the Latin America country. After the purchase, the two teams will continue to big data-driven smart transportation technologies development for intelligent transportation.

“We are confident that being part of Didi Chuxing will vastly enhance our capability to expand our services throughout Brazil to bring critical value to users, drivers and cities,” said Peter Fernandez, CEO of 99.

The latest investment marked another step forward of the Chinese car-hailing platform, which has entered partnerships with seven major international players and built up a network covering more than 1,000 cities with over 60% of the world population.

Globalization is a top strategic priority for DiDi. With enhanced investments in AI capabilities and smart transportation solutions, the company aims to advance the transformation of global transportation and automotive industries through diversified international operations and partnerships, according to Cheng Wei, Founder and CEO of DiDi.
