Chinese mainland bourses see rise in new investors

BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai and Shenzhen bourses had more than 1.21 million new investors in May, up 5.34 percent from the same period last year.

By the end of May, the total number of securities investors stood at 166.19 million, up 8.46 percent year on year, according to the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation.

The total settlement hit 104.69 trillion yuan (about 14.77 trillion U.S. dollars) in May, up 1.44 percent year on year.

Stocks on the two bourses have shown resilience regarding the impact of COVID-19.

At the end of May, the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index closed at 2,852.35, down 0.27 percent month on month, said the People's Bank of China in an online statement.

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange Component Index closed at 10,746.08 points at the end of May, up 0.23 percent from the end of April.

In May, the daily average turnover was 249.93 billion yuan on the Shanghai bourse, up 3.48 percent month on month, and 375 billion yuan on the Shenzhen bourse, down 2.92 percent month on month.
