Bangkok (People's Daily) - Chinese new energy vehicle giants GWM, BYD and MG presented their new car models on Tuesday at the 44th Motor Show in Bangkok with the ambition to further advance their dominance in Thailand's electronic vehicle market.

GWM showcased two new hybrid models from its Tank series, positioned to be luxury off-road SUVs. "We see ourselves taking the leading position in the Southeast Asian auto market. Bringing into play the latest Chinese technology, we hope to overtake the Japanese competitors on a bend," said Michael Zhang, vice president of GWM ASEAN.

MG launched its new MAXUS 9 seven-seat model, which can be pre-ordered by consumers. Zuo Chen, marketing and product strategy director of MG, said that due to the relatively large family structure and population in Thailand, there would be a huge demand for seven-seat models.

According to him, demand for new electronic models in the Thai auto market was basically outrunning supply due to a shortage of chips and batteries. "As the COVID-19 dies down in China, we will face fewer production bottlenecks in the future," said Zuo.

"Last December, the market share of new energy vehicles was 3 percent and it has reached 5 percent in January this year," said Zuo.

BYD made the debut of its right-hand drive Dolphin at the show. BYD ATTO3 has been a popular choice among Thai consumers since its introduction last year, with 11,539 units already delivered prior to the start of the show.
