BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.83 percent, at 2,895.34 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.27 percent higher at 11,001.58 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 687.47 billion yuan (about 97.12 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 667.23 billion yuan seen in the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,099 to 315 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,675 to 439 in Shenzhen.

Shares related to digital cash and agricultural services saw a strong performance, with digital cash company HengBao Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end the day at 8.36 yuan per share.

Bucking the upward trend, businesses in the agricultural cultivation sector led the loses. 

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.87 percent to close at 2,125.24 points on Friday.
