BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.44 percent, at 2,930.55.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.66 percent higher at 9,213.38.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two indices stood at 330.04 billion yuan (about 48.07 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 348.47 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Most stocks rose, with gainers outnumbering losers by 847 to 519 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,208 to 814 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the sectors of chemical and fertilizers were among the biggest gainers, with Jiangsu Chengxing Phosph-Chemical Co. Ltd. and Anhui Liuguo Chemical Co. Ltd. seeing their share prices rise by the daily 10-percent limit to 5.67 yuan and 5.02 yuan respectively.

Shares related to ship building led the losses, with shares of Cssc Science & technology Co. Ltd. dropping 2.91 percent to 14.66 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, gained 0.26 percent to close at 1,518.07.
