Chinese shares close higher Friday

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.28 percent, at 2,823.82 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.57 percent higher at 9,060.92 points.

Combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges stood at roughly 430.25 billion yuan (61.19 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from some 394 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 833 to 519 on the Shanghai bourse while gainers outnumbered losers by 1,190 to 827 in Shenzhen.

Beer, livestock breeding and tourism stocks led the rise, while the shipping, industrial cannabis and oil extraction sectors led the decline.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.79 percent to close at 1,567.99 points.
