Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.69 percent, at 2,926.39 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.63 percent higher at 9,089.46 points.

Combined trading volume of the two indices stood at 538.085 billion yuan ($795.8 billion), decreasing from 657.9 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most stocks rose, with gainers outnumbering losers by 1,148 to 284 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,660 to 436 in Shenzhen.

Husbandry industry lost heavily in the morning. However, at midday, hemp industry surged rapidly, driving most stocks to rebound.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.62 percent to close at 1,504.16 points.
