Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.45 percent to 2,899.94 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.58 percent higher at 9,175.83 points.

The combined turnover of stocks for the two indices stood at 323.25 billion yuan (about 46.97 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 414.13 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Most stocks rose, with gainers outnumbering losers by 1147 to 233 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,794 to 269 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the mining services sector were among the biggest gainers, with Sino Geophysical Co. Ltd. seeing its share price rise by the daily 10-percent limit to 30.15 yuan.

Shares related to metal and non-metal materials led the losses, with shares of Tibet Summit Resources Co. Ltd. dropping 9.97 percent to 14.81 yuan apiece.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.25 percent to close at 1,534.93 points.
