Chinese shares close lower Friday

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.32 percent to 2,938.14 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.16 percent lower at 9,533.5 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges stood at 415.8 billion yuan (about 59 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 361.3 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,204 to 245 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,707 to 407 in Shenzhen.

Shares of securities and liquor led the losses. The share price of Anhui Yingjia Distillery Co., Ltd. dropped 5.89 percent to 20.44 yuan.

Bucking the trend, food and tobacco sectors posted strong performance, with shares of Jiangxi Huangshanghuang Group Food Co., Ltd. hiking 7.8 percent to finish at 16.17 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.58 percent to close at 1,648.63 points.
