BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.44 percent, at 3,501.86 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.84 percent lower at 15,105.94 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices shrank to 942.5 billion yuan (about 145.89 billion U.S. dollars) from 953.7 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Brewing and fertilizer producing were among the sectors that gained the most, with shares of Gansu Huangtai Wine-Marketing Industry Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.
Non-ferrous metal and plastic product manufacturers suffered losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.72 percent to close at 3,200.55 points.
