Chinese shares close lower Thursday

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.89 percent at 2,929.09 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.13 percent lower at 9,464.83 points.

Combined trading volume of stocks at the two bourses expanded to 538.03 billion yuan (about 76.1 billion U.S. dollars) from 525.7 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Shares in the digital currency and pork sectors were among the biggest losers, with shares of Wens Foodstuff Group Co., Ltd. down 6.78 percent to 34.9 yuan apiece.

Bucking the trend, shares in the banking sector led the rise. China Merchants Bank Co., Ltd. saw its shares grow 2.53 percent to 35.22 yuan per share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.92 percent to close at 1,623.79 points.
