Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.56 percent to 2,777.56 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.39 percent lower at 8,859.47 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two indices stood at 523.63 billion yuan (about 75.15 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 416.16 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,288 to 173 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,894 to 249 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in liquor and securities rose, with industry leader Wuliangye Yibin Co., Ltd. up by 3.70 percent. Stocks related to hydrogen energy led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 1.53 percent to close at 1,507.91 points.
