Chinese shares close lower Wednesday

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.5 percent to 2,939.32 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.66 percent lower at 9,681.54 points.

The combined trading volume of stocks in the two indices shrank to 467.3 billion yuan (about 66 billion U.S. dollars) from 539 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Most stocks fell, with losers outnumbering gainers by 1,111 to 333 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,619 to 497 in Shenzhen.

Companies related to pharmaceutical industry gained, with shares of Honz Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. rising by the daily 10-percent limit.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.15 percent to close at 1,684.08 points.
