BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.03 percent, at 2,861.42 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.03 percent lower at 8,746.05 points.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at 407.78 billion yuan (about 59.2 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 422.4 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 704 to 655 on the Shanghai bourse, and 1,076 to 924 in Shenzhen.

Agriculture companies led the gain, with the JinJian Cereals Industry Co. Ltd seeing its share price rise by the daily 10-percent limit to 4.71 yuan a share.

Companies of pharmaceutical and pork sectors were among the biggest losers.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.35 percent to close at 1,451.18 points.
