BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.24 percent at 3,325.11 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.03 percent higher at 13,661.5 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices expanded to nearly 1.25 trillion yuan (about 178.8 billion U.S. dollars) from 1.2 trillion yuan the previous trading day.

Manufacturers of ships and aircraft were among the biggest winners, with shares of Cssc Science & technology Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Medical equipment makers also gained, with shares of Shinva Medical Instrument Co., Ltd. jumping by the daily limit.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.11 percent to close at 2,799.67 points.
