BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.33 percent, at 2,905.24 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.18 percent higher at 9,687.85 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 359.3 billion yuan (about 51.31 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 365.5 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Most stocks fell, with losers outnumbering gainers by 990 to 421 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,424 to 659 in Shenzhen.

Companies in medicine and chip sectors posted strong performances, with stocks of PKU HealthCare Corp., Ltd. surging by the daily 10-percent limit to close at 6.81 yuan per share.

Shares in the industries of digital currency, cultivation and ship building led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.62 percent to close at 1,681.79 points Wednesday.
