Chinese shares end higher Friday

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.88 percent to end at 2,973.66 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.3 percent higher at 9,666.58 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two indices expanded to 456.5 billion yuan (about 64.54 billion U.S. dollars) from 420.6 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers by 773 to 609 on the Shanghai bourse and losers outnumbered gainers by 1,029 to 1,010 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the securities sector led the gains, with shares of Polaris Bay Group Co., Ltd. rose by 7.58 percent.

Shares related to mining services also notched solid gains, as shares of China Oilfield Services Limited hiked by 8.35 percent.

Bucking the upward trend, shares of new material and agricultural services led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.01 percent to close at 1,666.83 points.
