Chinese shares end higher Monday

BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.15 percent to end at 3,007.88 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.24 percent higher at 9,786.64 points.

The combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges stood at 535.1 billion yuan (about 75.7 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 456.5 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,275 to 176 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,834 to 273 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the waterway transport industry led the gains, with shares of the Shanghai-based China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd. hiking by the daily limit of 10 percent to 7.04 yuan.

Banking shares were also among Monday's best performers, as China Everbright Bank Co., Ltd. rose 6.73 percent to 4.6 yuan apiece.

Bucking the upward trend, shares of animal husbandry companies fell, with the pork and chicken retailer Shandong Yisheng Livestock & Poultry Breeding Co., Ltd. dipping 1.84 percent to 25.55 yuan a share.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.75 percent to close at 1,679.38 points.
