BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.75 percent to end at 3,031.24 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.67 percent higher at 9,919.8 points.
The combined turnover of stocks on the two exchanges stood at 537.3 billion yuan (about 75.84 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 642.8 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Gainers outnumbered losers 1,028 to 370 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,440 to 614 in Shenzhen.
Stocks in the telecommunications industry led the gains, with shares of the Guangzhou-based devices manufacturer Super Telecom Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 26.57 yuan.
Insurance companies also notched solid gains, as shares of the market leading Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China, Ltd. climbed 3.1 percent to 92.34 yuan apiece.
Bucking the upward trend, shares in the agricultural sector led the losses, with agricultural technology innovator Wanxiang Doneed Co., Ltd. falling 2.83 percent to 13.73 yuan.
The ChiNext Index, China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.41 percent to close at 1,710.57 points.
