Chinese shares mixed at midday Wednesday

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.03 percent, at 2,981.88 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.40 percent higher at 10,229.58 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 503.20 billion yuan (about 71.82 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 442.31 billion yuan in the previous trading day.

Most stocks fell, with losers outnumbering gainers by 809 to 592 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,047 to 1,019 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the sectors of semiconductor and digital currency saw robust growth in share prices, with shares of Wuxi Taiji Industry Company Ltd. rising by the daily 10-percent limit to 8.32 yuan per share.

Shares in steel and wine industry led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.82 percent to close at 1,784.39 points Wednesday.
