BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.58 percent to 3,045.07 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.46 percent lower at 10,899.7 points.

Turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 647.26 billion yuan (about 91 billion U.S. dollars), down from 666.2 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to fuel gas and banking sectors led the gains, while those in sodium-ion batteries suffered losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.57 percent to close at 2,313.77 points Wednesday.
