TOKYO, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower on Wednesday as investors locked in gains following a recent rapid rally.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 648.27 points, or 0.92 percent, from Tuesday at 70,035.71.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 29.45 points, or 0.70 percent, lower at 4,154.11.

On the stock market, overheating concerns after the benchmark index crossed the psychologically important level of 70,000 prompted profit-taking for the time being, analysts said.

The selling of some artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related shares, which had been recent notable gainers, weighed on the market.
