TOKYO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed Monday, with lingering worries about the profitability of artificial intelligence investments dampening investor sentiment, while funds shifting into other stocks supported the broader market.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 503.51 points, or 0.80 percent, from Friday at 62,189.65.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 7.17 points, or 0.18 percent, higher at 3,972.98.

Selling in some AI- and semiconductor-related stocks dragged down the Nikkei, as recent concerns over the profitability and sustainability of massive AI-related investments persisted.

On the other hand, rotational buying pushed the majority of sectors higher. Stocks that typically benefit from rising crude prices, such as oil-related issues and general trading company shares, were among the top performers.

Analysts said investors tended to stay on the sidelines ahead of policy meetings by the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan, as well as earnings reports from some major AI-related companies in the United States and Japan.
