Japan's Nikkei closes lower on selling ahead of year-end holidays

TOKYO, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index closed lower on Friday as selling took the upper hand here ahead of upcoming holidays despite a solid showing on Wall Street overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 87.20 points, or 0.36 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 23,837.72.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 1.98 points, or 0.11 percent, to finish at 1,733.18.

Rubber product, mining and food-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
