Chinese electronic giant Hisense has spearheaded the development of laser television, according to survey agency China Market Monitor that ranked the laser TV product at the top of sales charts last week.

The 80-inch 4K laser TV, which was launched in May, is the first laser TV at the top of weekly TV sales.

TV products of the Qingdao-based company have seen skyrocketing sales in France and Canada, with a more than 500 percent rise on year-on-year basis, the company said.

The spike in sales is believed to be linked to a recent sort in sports marketing as the company is a major sponsor of the FIFA World Cup.

Though China is a big TV-consuming country, the core technology – from the CRT (cathode ray tube) era to OLED (organic light-emitting diode) times – was in the hands of foreign companies. With Hisense, things have changed.

Laser TVs are believed to be no different from high-end LCD TVs in terms of brightness, color expression and clarity.

Internationally, there are more than 20 companies, including China’s Xgimi and Jmgo, which have started producing laser TV, a move that is believed to reshape the television industry.
