China's safeguard measures on sugar imports conform to WTO rules, said China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), in response to Brazil's request for consultations.

The import tariff quota for sugar products is China's trade management method that is clearly reserved when China joined the WTO, said MOFCOM.

Sugar is one of China's important agricultural products and is related to the interests of more than 40 million sugar farmers in China. The industry has been affected due to the increase of imported sugar.

The Chinese government has therefore implemented safeguard measures for imported sugar in accordance with the requirements of domestic industries.

China will adequately handle Brazil's request in accordance with the WTO dispute settlement procedures, said MOFCOM.
