Formerly a major industry in the city, the coal industry contributed to over 70 percent of Huaying's industrial output, hiring more than 30,000 workers.
Since 2009, city authorities have pushed forward industrial transformation to reduce reliance on the industry, and relocated employees in the coal sector to non-resource industries.
The proportion of resource-based industries has decreased from 60.3 percent in 2008 to 17.9 percent in 2017.
