Tokyo stocks close higher on eased concerns over global economic outlook

TOKYO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday as recent concerns over a global economic recession were eased by market hopes for stimulus measures from major central banks in Europe and Asia.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 144.35 points, or 0.71 percent, from Friday to close the day at 20,563.16.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, rose 9.04 points, or 0.61 percent, to finish at 1,494.33.

Oil and coal product, securities house and bank-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
