TOKYO, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as buying on the back of U.S. shares' upbeat performance overnight gave way to selling on the yen's appreciation versus the U.S. dollar which sent some exporters lower.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 33.48 points, or 0.14 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 23,827.73.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 5.84 points, or 0.34 percent, to finish at 1,713.08.

Iron and steel, machinery, and information and communication-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
