TOKYO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar promoted investors to secure gains following the market's three-day winning streak.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 99.75 points, or 0.44 percent, from Monday at 22,614.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 5.44 points, or 0.34 percent, lower at 1,571.71.

Pharmaceutical, land transportation, and electric power and gas-related issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
