TOKYO, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as the yen's comparative strength against the U.S. dollar weighed on exporters amid a cautious mood ahead of U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's speech later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 82.00 points, or 0.35 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 23,208.86.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 8.59 points, or 0.53 percent, to finish at 1,615.89.
Mining, insurance, and real estate-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
