Tokyo stocks closed lower Friday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index snapping an eight-day winning streak, as investors opted to lock in recent gains amid concerns about rising COVID-19 infections around the world.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 135.01 points, or 0.53 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 25,385.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 23.01 points, or 1.33 percent, to finish at 1,703.22.

Rubber product, real estate and air transportation issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
