The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 45.85 points, or 0.21 percent, from Friday to close the day at 21,761.65.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 5.61 points, or 0.35 percent, to finish at 1,620.14.

Insurance, marine transportation and bank-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
