TOKYO, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed mixed on Friday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average's overnight surge supported some buying, and some investors opted to secure gains ahead of the three-day weekend.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 42.37 points, or 0.20 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,685.90.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 2.32 points, or 0.15 percent, to finish at 1,576.31.

Precision instrument and retail issues led notable gainers, while mining and miscellaneous product-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
