TOKYO, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Monday as a slowing daily coronavirus death toll in Europe and the United States lifted investor sentiment, while the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar added support.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 756.11 points, or 4.24 percent, from Friday to close the day at 18,576.30.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 51.17 points, or 3.86 percent, to finish at 1,376.30.

Marine transportation, securities house and transportation equipment-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
