TOKYO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower on Friday as investors continued to offload issues in line with a global rout, as fears are mounting that the spread of the coronavirus could hurt the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 805.27 points, or 3.67 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,142.96, marking its lowest closing level since Sept. 5.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 57.19 points, or 3.65 percent, lower to finish at 1,510.87.

All industry categories closed in negative territory, with information and communication, real estate and electric appliance issues comprising those that declined the most by the close of play.
