TOKYO, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday, as Wall Street's overnight tumble triggered investors to offload technology-related issues.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 437.79 points, or 1.53 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 28,197.42.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 21.22 points, or 1.14 percent, to close at 1,838.85.

Information and communication, electric appliance and precision instrument issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
