TOKYO, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as investor sentiment was dented by renewed concerns over ongoing trade issues, with investors in a circumspect mood ahead of Japan's trade talks with the United States later in the day and comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the end of the week.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 58.65 points, or 0.28 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 20,618.57.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 9.26 points, or 0.61 percent, to finish at 1,497.51.
The majority of industry categories retreated into negative territory by the close of play, with electric power and gas, glass and ceramic and nonferrous metal issues comprising the day's notable decliners.
