Tokyo stocks drop in morning on US crude oil futures' historic dive

TOKYO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks were sharply lower Tuesday morning as the global economic impact of the coronavirus was brought into focus after crude oil futures in New York plunged below zero overnight for the first time.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 310.35 points, or 1.58 percent, from Monday to 19,358.77.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 12.75 points, or 0.89 percent, at 1,419.66.

Iron and steel, insurance and service issues, along with energy companies and trading houses comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
