Tokyo stocks fall in morning on concerns over US economic decline, virus spread

TOKYO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks were lower Friday morning as investor sentiment was dented by the U.S. economy's record quarterly decline and the prospects for the global economy amid rising global cases of the coronavirus.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 418.25 points, or 1.87 percent, from Thursday to 21,920.98.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 27.65 points, or 1.80 percent, at 1,511.82.

Rubber product, pulp and paper, and metal product issues comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
