The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 2.44 points, or 0.14 percent, at 1,728.06.

Insurance and securities house issues led notable decliners, while land transportation and air transportation issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
